WW1 BRITISH (BEF) MARK 1 BRODIE HELMET AND LINER
BRITISH WW1 EXPEDITIONARY FORCE MK1 MARK 1 COMBAT HELMET - ORIGINAL
This is an original British Expeditionary Force (BEF) Mk1 Mark 1 combat helmet. Made of steel. It is maker marked but we can't make it out.
Comes with liner and chin strap, but chin strap is broken.(probably ca be fixed )
Liner is a little squished on one side. Liner is approx. 8” long and 7” wide. Not sure what size that is but it seems large.
Contains a rubber ring cushion which was introduced to the helmet style in 1917.
This helmet model was used by both the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF).
The Brodie helmet was originally designed in London in 1915 by Latvian inventor John Leopold Brodie, and named after him. This was a modified form of the Mark 1 in Britian and the M1917 Helmet in the U.S.
Other names were the Tommy Helmet, Battle Bowler, Shrapnel Helmet along with the Dishpan Hat, Washbasin, Tin Pan Hat and Kelly Helmet.
Steel helmets became very common during World War I because of close combat, trench warfare, and destructive new weapons.
