The U.S. Thompson submachine gun (also known as the "Tommy Gun", "Chicago Typewriter", "Chicago Piano", “Trench Sweeper” or "Trench Broom") is a blowback-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed selective-fire submachine gun.

This gun was invented in 1918 by T. Thompson who was a U.S. Army Brigadier general.  Though originally made for trench war in WWI it was not finished before the war ended.

The was widely used by the U.S. armed forces in WW2 and was almost extensively used by other Allied troops during WW2.  Its main models were designated as the M1928A1, M1 and M1A1 during this time.

It was the first weapon to be labelled and marketed as a "submachine gun".
