Normally military insignia of most countries were different styles for it’s Navy compared to it’s land based counterparts. This was also followed by the Germans in WWII as a result the visor caps for Kriegsmarine did not have the bullion chin straps to show rank but used leather chin straps instead as bullion was impractical to use.
Because of this there was no real way to determine Officers from Senior NCO’s up to 1936 at which time visor trim was introduced for officer ranks. Three different patterns were used for the Junior Company Grade Officers, the Senior Field Grade Officers and the Flag General Grade Officers.
