The Hohenstaufen or 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" was a Waffen-SS armoured division. The name came from the Hohenstaufen dynasty. Agerman aristocratic family from the 12th and 13tth centuries who produced several kings and emperors.
Hohenstaufen division started in December 1942 they were in battles on both the Western and Eastern Fronts.
Made up of young conscripts along with soldiers from the SS Division Leibstandarte and other Waffen SS divisions. Originally, Hohenstaufen was designated as a Panzergrenadier division, but in October 1943 it was upgraded to Panzer division status, with an estimated manpower of about 19,000.
Hohenstaufen took part in the relief of German forces in the Kamenets-Podolsky pocket, Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Ardennes Offensive and Operation Spring Awakening.
The division surrendered on 8 May 1945, at Steyr to the U.S.
