The Heimwehr Danzig unit was established on June 20, 1939, by the government under Albert Forster when the decided they wanted their own armed forces. This new unit formed the Danzig SS Wachsturmbann “Eimann”, and the Heimwehr Danzig was under their umbrella.
This early unit fought with the Germany Army against the Polish Army in the Polish Invasion. Some of the “Danzig” members committed mass killings of Polish civilians. After the invasion of Poland the SS Heimwehr Danzig merged with the 3rd SS Totenkopf Division and ceased to be its own unit.
The Volksdeutsche (ethnic Germans) in Danzig founded the 1,550-man strong Heimwehr Danzig.
