Reichsleiter was the second highest political rank of the NSDAP, second only to the Führer.  The Reichsleiter reported directly to Adolf Hitler, and could only be appointed by him.

The NSDAP was a paramilitary organization. The original purpose of these ranks was to provide leadership and organization during election. After 1933, these ranks became a political chain of command, harmonizing Nazi party leadership with local, regional and national government.
