Initially known as the Flemish Legion, a military formation recruited among Dutch speaking volunteers from German occupied Belgium, principally Flanders, this group was disbanded in May 1943 and reorganized and renamed the SS Assault Brigade Langemarck (SS - Sturmbrigade Langemarck).
Officially designated a division in September 1944, it remained two thousand strong, with two hundred of the soldiers refusing to swear allegiance to Hitler after the Flemish Legion was disbanded, and these soldiers were transferred to penal units.
It participated in fighting in Ukraine, Estonia, and Pomerania. Eventually surrendering on May 3, 1945 to the Red Army at Mecklenburg.
