HEAVY TANKS

The desire to produce tanks with more armor protection and greater firepower resulted in some steel monsters being built in WW11. Though they were capable of knocking out most enemy tanks, their slow speed, high fuel consumption, and even higher production costs meant relatively few were built. Only 1300 German Tiger 1’s were manufactured. The U.S. M6 Heavy Tank, originally planned for 5500 units never reached the battlefield as the project was scrapped because of mechanical difficulties.
