Forty Two of the Infantry Divisions and four of the Airborne Divisions served in Europe and the Mediterranean, the remainder served in the Pacific.
The Infantry Regiment was organized with:
• 3 Battalions
• 12 Lettered Companies (A-M< skipping J) • Halftrack-mounted 105mm Howitzers • 6 halftrack mounted 75 mm Howitzer or guns • Anti-tank Company • Service Company. • The fourth Company in each Battalion (D,H,M) were heavy Weapon Companies. • The Regiment and each Battalion also had a Headquarters Company. The Regimental Headquarters Company included an Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon. • The Battalion Headquarters Company included an Ammunition and Pioneer Platoon and an AT Platoon Typical Organization of a 1943 Infantry Division: • Reconnaissance Troop • 3 Infantry Regiments, each with 3 Infantry Battalions, an Anti-tank Company and a Cannon Company • 3 Light Artillery Battalions • Medium Artillery Battalion • Engineer Battalion • Signals Company • Total Strength: 14,253 Divisional Firepower:
